An important message from our President and CEO,
John Iglesias

It’s a roller coaster out there. Every day, every hour, there’s more news, and rapid, complex changes are happening in the economic marketplace and on the stock market. Understandably, people want to know how all this activity impacts their lives and their money.

As always, GHCU remains fully committed to providing the services our members need, including making available information that may answer some of your questions.

  • The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act (commonly called the “Bailout Bill”) was signed into law on October 3, 2008. This law increases the federal insurance on all deposits from $100,000 to $250,000 until December 31, 2009. GHCU, like all credit unions, is insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) and backed by the full faith and credit of the federal government.
  • GHCU remains solid, secure and well-capitalized. For the 60 years of our history, we have engaged only in careful, thoughtful investing. We know that the money we invest is your money, and you deserve to have it invested wisely. That means no subprime lending—ever.
  • Not one penny of insured savings has ever been lost by a member of a federally insured credit union.*

If this doesn’t completely address all your concerns, I’d like to invite you to call us. My executive team and I are ready to speak with you and answer any questions you may have on the security of your deposits at GHCU. To speak to a member of the executive team, please call us at 206-298-9394 or 800-562-5515. We’re here to help.

*”Your Insured Funds,” NCUA, October 2008

Sincerely,

John Iglesias
President and CEO, Group Health Credit Union

Ready to make the switch to GHCU?
We’d like to take a moment to tell you why making GHCU your primary financial institution is a smart move.

  • Your accounts are very accessible. In addition to our five local branches, 5,500 Shared Branching locations and 25,000 surcharge-free ATMs nationwide, we also provide free online banking and bill pay. You’re never far from your funds.
  • All deposit accounts with GHCU are federally insured by the NCUA to $250,000.
  • GHCU has money to lend, despite the current “credit crunch.” Come talk to us about your loan needs.
  • We have very competitive rates on loans and high-yields on savings products. Our not-for-profit status means we funnel money back to our members rather than out to stockholders.
  • We’re local. You don’t have to go to Wall Street for financial expertise and assistance. We’re right here on “Main Street” with you.
  • Switching is easy. Not only do we have tools to help you, we’re happy to walk you through the process should you have any concerns.

Ready to make the switch to GHCU? We make it easy with our switch kit.

Free Financial Education Seminars
As a community service to our members and their friends and family we are offering free seminars on a variety of topics. To reserve a spot, contact Elaine Ponton at 206-612-5937 or email to elainep@ghcu.org. Include your name, phone number, email address and location and date of the seminar you'll be attending.

Keep Your Identity Secure in the Information Age

  • “Opt out” of information sharing when possible.
Make sure your computer has good security, and update it frequently. Don’t use your mother’s maiden name, the name of a pet or part of your Social Security number for passwords. Best to use random passwords with a combination of letters and number, capitol letters and small. The Internet is like an open door for criminals: be sure you have adequate locks.
Order your free credit report at www.annualcredit
    report.com
. Each of the “big three” consumer credit-reporting companies must provide one free report each year, so get your statements and look them over carefully.
  • When you give your information on the Internet, check the URL. The “http” that begins most Internet addresses should change to “https” to indicate a secure site.
  • Write checks with a gel-ink pen. This ink leaves a trace in the paper so that checks can’t be “washed” and rewritten by criminals.
  • Monitor children’s access to file-sharing and file-swapping programs: some of these can leave your computer vulnerable.

Children's Hospital blanket drive

GHCU “wrapped up” its Blanket Drive on September 8, with GHCU President and CEO John Iglesias presenting 150 donated blankets to Children’s Hospital COO and President Patrick Hagan. The blankets, donated by staff and members, will be given to children who enter the hospital for treatment. Every child who is treated at Children’s gets to keep the blanket of his or her choice. According to hospital officials, the blankets are an important part of a child’s healing process. In an environment where everything is unfamiliar, sometimes scary and often painful, a soft blanket can provide continuity and comfort.

GHCU and Children’s Hospital have a relationship of many years’ standing. As one of GHCU’s Community Business Partners (CBPs), Children’s enjoys certain advantages such as free, on-site financial education seminars, special promotions and onsite account opening times for employees. See if your company is a CBP; if not, contact Elaine Ponton at elainep@ghcu.org to learn more about becoming a CBP. Children’s gives out as many as 300 to 500 blankets every month, and the hospital is open to donations of new blankets at any time. If you wish to donate a blanket or make another gift, please visit the Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center website.

A Thousand Pink Ribbons Later….
Nearly 1,000 pink ribbons sold at $1 apiece, at least three bake sales, a BBQ, a couple of book sales, an auction, donations from employees and their friends and family on the Komen website: it all adds up. For the 2008 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, GHCU registered 46 walkers and raised nearly $8,300!

Employees came up with really innovative ways to raise funds to help cure breast cancer: one employee raffled off a week’s parking in her coveted parking spot; another had the idea to raffle off a free-day-with-pay. Artistically gifted staff members contributed beautiful handmade art and craft items to a silent auction (not so “silent” when bidders discovered they’d been outbid); one employee even contributed her car to the cause!

All in all, our efforts were satisfyingly successful: in terms of money raised, we were the #11 team on a very long list. For all their very hard work and generous contributions of money, time and talent, GHCU would like to thank members and staff and congratulate everyone on a job well done.

Credit University teaches kids about money
To help educate high school students about money management Group Health Credit Union is partnering with six other credit unions to sponsor Credit University, a financial literacy program for high school students. The program teaches kids the importance of saving their money through pop culture. The results have been great! Pre- and post-testing of 6,500 Credit University students in 2006 showed an 11 percent increase in teen savings. GHCU is pleased to partner with Qualstar, Sound, Watermark, America's, Seattle Metropolitan and Verity credit unions to bring Credit University to Washington state students. Listen to a NPR story on the program here.
